How we compared

We only used each app's official pages, app stores and help centers, on October 19, 2026. When official sources contradict each other or don't say, we write "unconfirmed" instead of guessing. Nobody paid to be on this list.

The best for each need

To train and count calories in the same app, in Portuguese, Spanish or Italian: FIT4EAT. For a free, unlimited barcode scanner: Cronometer, FatSecret or FIT4EAT. If you use your phone in English and want the biggest community: MyFitnessPal. For simple intermittent fasting: Yazio.

Cal AI focuses almost entirely on photo logging and requires a subscription to see the results. Since March 2026 it has belonged to MyFitnessPal.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

Yazio's photo logging went from free to Pro. Lose It! is moving its barcode scanner to Premium. MyFitnessPal bought Cal AI and launched an AI coach, English-only and for subscribers. Cronometer added Brazilian Portuguese in September 2026.

FAQ

Questions? Short answers.

What's the most accurate calorie counter app?
None is exact: accuracy depends mostly on logging everything, in the right amounts. Photos help you log more often, and checking the grams at the end improves the result.
Is there a completely free calorie app?
FatSecret says on the App Store that it's free, with separate paid plans. FIT4EAT, Cronometer and MyFitnessPal have free versions with the full diary; the difference is what they keep for the paid plan.
What's the best calorie app in Portuguese, Spanish or Italian?
Almost all of them are translated, but not everything works in those languages. In MyFitnessPal and Lose It!, photo logging and other features need your phone set to English. In FIT4EAT the AI answers in Portuguese from Portugal and Brazil, Spanish and Italian.
Is it worth paying for a calorie app?
Only if you use what's in the paid plan. Start with the free version for two weeks and pay once you know which feature you're missing.
